Getting the Action you Deserve

--------------------------------------------------------

Parents have a hard time making an impact on their dyslexic child's school or college. Kathi Borthwick describes methods they can use:

"It's time to act. We have a situation that demands attention on a global level. A large segment of our population is facing many challenges during the next decade. We have made great strides in technology. Research is going gang busters. We know that children learn differently. We also know that early intervention and enrichment is the key in learning issues. We need to move fast and band together to get things moving. How many children and adults struggle needlessly ? The general public is unaware of the scope and meaning of dyslexia. We are invisible. It is like the Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Anderson. We need to push heightened awareness. . ."

New Dyslexia Adults Link Discussion Board

--------------------------------------------------------

Last month we launched a new Dyslexia Adults Link Discussion Board. I am very pleased to say that it has been very well received, and is used daily by dyslexic adults. Topics recently discussed include:

- New book of relaxation techniques for ADHD and dyslexics

- Getting tested

- Career

- My Student

- ADHD not Dyslexia

- Tutoring math to someone with dyslexia

- Some kind advice

The Dyslexic Adults Link Discussion Board is at:

Harry Potter books

--------------------------------------------------------

Two recommended Harry Potter books are listed on the Dyslexia Parents Resource 'Books' page. 'My Year with Harry Potter' is the story of a dyslexic boy who fell in love with the Harry Potter books!

Also, 'Harry Potter on CD Audio'. The Harry Potter books are very attractive to a dyslexic child, but may be too difficult to read without help. Now on CD, a child can follow the story in the book as it read aloud to them.

Left handed?

--------------------------------------------------------

Humans are not the only creatures to be left- or right-handed. Research by Bill Hopkins at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in Atlanta has shown that, like humans, apes have hand preferences. Whereas about a tenth of humans are left-handed, around a third of chimpanzees are left hand dominant. This tendency is also greater in chimps who have a larger number of older siblings.

Our page has links to all kinds of left-handed sites, including the Left-handed Liberation Front, advice about left-handed handwriting, and the first left-handed piano! Full story at:

Spanish translation

--------------------------------------------------------

Many thanks to Alba Canero who volunteered to translate into Spanish. The magazine article 'Hearing Your Child Read' is now available for you to print out for Spanish-speaking parents. Other translations are in the pipeline.
